Concrete finishing is the least forgiving part of a pour. You get one window, it closes on the concrete's schedule rather than yours, and if your equipment cannot keep up with the slab you have poured, the result is permanent.
Sizing a finishing fleet is really about one question: can you cover the square footage before the window closes?
Screeds come first
Nothing downstream fixes a badly screeded slab. Get the surface flat and consolidated at this stage or spend the rest of the day chasing it.
Truss screeds
A truss screed spans the pour on a rigid aluminium truss and vibrates the concrete as it is pulled across. It consolidates and levels in one pass, and it is the workhorse for wide slabs, bridge decks, and anything where you need a long straight reference.
Choose a truss screed when the pour is wide, when you need consolidation as well as levelling, and when you have edge forms or screed rails to run on.
Vibratory and roller screeds
Better for smaller or irregular pours where setting up a truss is more work than the slab justifies. Faster to deploy, less capable on wide flat work.
Trowels: walk-behind vs ride-on
This decision is almost entirely about area.
Walk-behind trowels
A machine like the PRO436 is the right tool for slabs up to roughly 5,000 square feet, for edges and corners a ride-on cannot reach, and for any space a ride-on physically cannot enter.
They are more manoeuvrable, far cheaper, and they will always have a place on the crew — even shops that own ride-ons keep walk-behinds for perimeter work.
Ride-on trowels
Above about 5,000 square feet, a ride-on stops being a luxury. Two counter-rotating rotors cover ground dramatically faster, the operator is not fighting the machine, and — the part people underestimate — operator fatigue stops being the limiting factor on how much slab you can finish.
The rule of thumb: if you are regularly finishing large commercial slabs and racing the set, a ride-on pays for itself in avoided callbacks, not just in labour.
Blades: the cheap decision that determines the finish
Trowel blades are consumable and shop-specific, and using the wrong one is the most common finishing mistake.
- Float blades (pans) — first pass, on soft concrete. Wide surface area keeps the machine from digging in. Opens the surface and brings up paste.
- Combination blades — do both jobs adequately, neither perfectly. Reasonable for small crews who cannot justify changing blades.
- Finish blades — narrow, for the final passes. Progressively steeper pitch produces the burnished hard finish.
Running finish blades too early tears the surface. Running float pans too late does nothing at all. Timing is judged by the concrete, not the clock — the classic test is that a bootprint should leave a mark of roughly a quarter inch.
Surface prep and repair equipment
Finishing equipment gets the pour right. Surface prep equipment fixes what came before, or prepares a slab for a coating.
- Scarifiers — aggressive removal of coatings, laitance, and high spots. A handheld unit like the FS050 handles edges and small areas.
- Ride-on scrapers — removing tile, adhesive, or coatings over large areas. The T3000XME is battery powered, which matters enormously for indoor removal work where exhaust is not acceptable.
- Material spreaders — an MS 20 puts down dry shake hardener evenly, which is nearly impossible to do consistently by hand across a large slab.
Mixing
For patch work, grout, and small pours, a dedicated mortar mixer produces a far more consistent mix than a drum mixer or a paddle in a bucket — the paddles shear the material rather than tumbling it, which is what mortar and grout actually need.
Sizing your crew's kit
- Under 2,000 sq ft typical pour — vibratory screed, one walk-behind trowel, hand tools.
- 2,000 - 5,000 sq ft — truss screed, two walk-behind trowels so you can run float and finish without changing blades mid-window.
- 5,000+ sq ft — truss screed, one ride-on for the field, at least one walk-behind for edges.
The most common failure is owning exactly one trowel. When the window opens you need to be finishing, not swapping blades.
