Eighteen inches deep is the number that matters here. That is below the frost line in a lot of the country and deep enough that a buried water line, gas line or electrical run stays where you put it. The BravePro BRPT18 gets there with a carbide-tipped shark chain cutting a 3-inch trench through compacted gravel and hard soil — ground where a light landscape trencher simply skates.
What makes it practical is the size. It is narrow enough to fit through most gates and doorways and has built-in lift handles, so it reaches back yards and crawl spaces a towable trencher will never see. Three handle positions and adjustable depth settings let one operator set it up for the cut instead of fighting it.
A ratchet mechanism on the wheels stops the machine pulling away from the trench line — the single most annoying failure mode on a walk-behind trencher. The frame is heavy-gauge unibody steel with a powder-coat finish, and it is made in the USA.
