The Powermatic 209BHH-3 is a floor-standing 20-inch thickness planer with a helical cutterhead, a built-in digital readout and cast iron tables. A 5 HP three phase, 230/460V motor drives the head across the full 20-inch width, and it takes boards up to 8 inches thick.

It is built for cabinet and furniture shops that surface a lot of wide hardwood and want a clean finish straight off the planer, and it carries Powermatic's 5-year warranty.

Helical Head, Smoother Finish

The cutterhead runs 4 rows of 68 four-sided carbide inserts at 5,200 RPM. Compared with straight knives, a helical head cuts quieter and leaves a cleaner surface, and a dull or nicked insert is rotated to a fresh edge instead of resetting a whole knife.

Repeatable Thickness

The built-in digital readout shows board thickness as you raise or lower the head, so you can set a target and hit it again on the next board. Two feed speeds, 16 and 28 FPM, cover finish passes and fast stock removal.

Powermatic planer questions

Is the 209BHH-3 ready for 460V?

It ships wired for 230V three-phase. To run it on 460V, Powermatic's manual calls for magnetic switch PM1-538, sold separately. If your shop is 460V, the 209BHH-4 comes pre-wired for it.

How thick and how wide a board can it plane?

Up to 20 inches wide and 8 inches thick. The minimum is 1/8 inch thick and 8 inches long.

How deep can it cut in one pass?

Up to 3/32 inch across the full 20-inch width.

What happens when the inserts dull?

Each carbide insert has four cutting edges. Rotate it a quarter turn to a fresh edge, and replace it once all four are used.

What warranty does it carry?

Powermatic covers it with its 5-year warranty (2 years for commercial or industrial use).
