A plate compactor is the wrong tool in a trench. Plates vibrate a wide footprint across the surface; a rammer hammers a narrow shoe straight down, which is what actually compacts cohesive soil — clay, silt, mixed backfill — in the confined space around a pipe or against a foundation wall. If your spec calls for compaction in lifts in a trench, this is the machine that passes the test.
The BTR76H runs a Honda GXR120, and that engine choice is not incidental. The GXR is Honda's purpose-built rammer engine, designed to run at the steep angles and constant pounding a jumping jack subjects it to — not a general-purpose GX with a different sticker. It delivers 1,600–1,800 kgf of impact force at 640–680 blows per minute with a 50–75 mm (2–3 in.) jump: identical output to the diesel BTR78Y, on gasoline.
The shoe is 280 x 300 mm and the machine weighs 76 kg (168 lbs). Drive is through an automatic centrifugal clutch, so the shoe sits still at idle and engages as the operator opens the throttle. This is the most common rammer size on North American job sites, and the one most rental counters stock.

Straight talk about the force figure. This machine is advertised in several places as "4,046 lbs. force" and in others as "13,276 lbs" — the latter works out to about 59 kN, which is not physically plausible for a rammer this size and appears to be a data error repeated across dealer feeds. Beton Trowel publishes 1,600–1,800 kgf, and that is what we publish. Note also that one well-known listing names the engine a "Honda GX120" — it is a GXR120, which is a different and better engine for this application.
Beton Trowel publishes no crated shipping weight for any rammer in this range, and we will not invent one. The 168 lbs above is the machine's operating weight.
