A plate compactor and a rammer do not do the same job. A plate presses down and works well on loose granular material. A rammer hits — 3,600 lbs of impact force on every beat — and impact is what compacts clay, silt and other cohesive soils that a plate will simply ride across.
The other reason to own one is width. The shoe is 11.2 x 13.4 in., narrow enough to work the bottom of a utility trench, alongside a foundation wall, or around a pipe — places where a 20 in. plate physically will not fit. Backfill over a water line, prep under a patio, tamp around a post: this is the machine.
Power is a Honda GXR120, the engine Honda designed specifically for rammers — it is built to run at the steep angle a rammer works at, which a standard horizontal-shaft engine is not.
