Bear Cat CH6627H Wood Chipper — 6-Inch, Road Towable, Vanguard 23 HP

The Bear Cat CH6627H is the six-inch hydraulic-feed chipper that sits where most tree work actually lives — limbs, trunks and heavy brush up to 6 inches, all day, without the diesel and the 2,500-lb trailer that come with the next size up. Rental yards, municipalities and landscape crews buy this one in volume for exactly that reason.

Its defining feature is the cantilever-mounted rotor. On a conventional chipper, stringy, sappy or wet material wraps the shaft behind the disc and someone spends an afternoon cutting it off. A cantilevered disc has no shaft back there to wrap. Combine that with a 12-inch hydraulic feed roller, electronic AutoFeed that regulates feed speed against engine load, and a 6.5 x 13 inch feed opening that swallows forked limbs, and you get a machine that keeps taking material while the crew keeps dragging it over.

The engine is a Briggs & Stratton Vanguard 23 HP with electric start — the commercial Vanguard, not a consumer twin. Four reversible heat-treated blades, a four-sided adjustable anvil you index rather than replace, a triple-banded belt drive, and a standard 2-inch coupler on highway-rated tires. Built by Crary Industries in West Fargo, North Dakota.
