The Bear Cat FC400 is a 228-lb, four-inch chipper you push where the brush already is. Ten-inch foam-filled tires and a balanced handle mean one person moves it across a lawn without a tractor, a hitch or a second set of hands — and foam-filled means it is never flat when you need it in October.

The diamond-shaped 9.85-inch chute is the detail that separates it from a box-store chipper. A square opening jams when a forked limb hits a corner; a diamond funnels the fork toward the center and lets gravity do the feeding. Behind it sits a factory-balanced 15.25-inch cantilevered rotor carrying four reversible heat-treated blades — four, not the two most machines this size use — so it cuts smaller chips and cuts them with less engine effort.

Power is a Briggs & Stratton XR Professional Series 420cc, 13 gross HP, recoil start, turning the disc through matched 4L belts.
