Sixteen inches is the compactor most contractors reach for first. It is wide enough to build a real subbase at a sensible pace and narrow enough to still work a trench or get between a wall and a form. If you are buying one plate compactor rather than three, this is usually the one.
It produces 2,697 lbs of centrifugal force at 5,400 vibrations per minute through a 22 x 16 in. plate, travelling at 72 ft/min. That is the right amount of force for granular soils, gravel and sand — enough to hit compaction spec without over-working a thin lift.
The wheel kit, water tank and polyurethane pad all come with it. The pad is what lets you run the machine across pavers and finished concrete without scarring the surface — on most competing machines that is an extra purchase you discover you need on the first paver job.
